Our History

The American Correctional Health Services Association’s rich history began in December of 1976 when a group of dedicated healthcare providers decided to work together to better the environment in which healthcare was provided in the correctional environments in which they worked. Formed as a corporation, ACHSA’s main goal was, and still is, education.

ACHSA boasts a roster of Past Presidents whose correctional experiences include Medical, Nursing, Dental, Administrative and Mental Health. Please take a moment and review the list of our influential Past Presidents.

Of course, an organization is only as good as the individuals who “step up” and volunteer to promote and promulgate the mission. ACHSA annually awards at least one Distinguished Service Award to an individual or individuals who significantly influences correctional health.
